In this episode of Mr. P. Explores, we headed back to the Motor City (Detroit, Michigan) to check out the abandoned and overgrown Belle Isle Children's Zoo (sometimes known as Safaripark), which has been slowly and sadly deteriorating away since 2002. The zoo has been there since 1895 when it was established as the Detroit Zoo, and wa sa major destination for Detroit families up until 1947 when a new zoo was built on the mainland. The old zoo was rechristened the Children's Zoo and maintained that moniker up through the 1980's, when the whole establishment underwent a massive overhaul. Featuring raised deck-walks across the entire zoo, African-style buildings and a large range of exotic animals, the new zoo opened to major fanfare. Sadly, by the time the millenium rolled around, Detroit's coffers were in bad shape and the money to maintain the zoo ran out. In 2002, it closed for good, and despite several attempts to revive it, the funds could never be found. The place remains abandoned today, looking more like a tropical South American ruin, rife with hidden temples and restless natives, like something Indiana Jones would navigate himself through to snag a Nazi-melting artifact. Intrigued yet? Then come along on the adventure and check out the wreckage that is the Belle Island Zoo!
