Gabon’s incumbent president Ali Bongo has been inaugurated. This extends his family's rule into a fifth decade. A handful of African leaders have attended the ceremony, including the presidents of Mali, Niger, Togo and Sao Tome. Bongo's inauguration comes as fears of fresh violence have resurfaced across the country. During the swearing-in ceremony, Bongo pledged to ensure equal opportunities for all in his new government.
