Panasonic readies new 4680 batteries, which Tesla sees as key to its affordable $25,000 electric vehicles, and shares insights on the development of these 4680 batteries.
These new batteries, which Tesla plans to use, drive more power and should give Tesla vehicles longer range. They should lower the cost of EV development and thus lower the cost of future Tesla vehicles.
Panasonic's Energy Division CEO Kazuo Tadanobu recently shared some insights about the company’s upcoming 4680 EV batteries, which would be sold to partner Tesla, in which he explained how the 4680 cells could effectively initiate change in the transportation sector.
According to Tadanobu, the development of the new 4680 batteries has “taken an immense amount of stamina.” This was because creating 4680 batteries is not as simple as enlarging existing cells. Tadanobu noted that changing the entire shape of the cell took “considerable nerve,” and that Panasonic “didn’t know how they would be received” by Tesla.
According to Tadanobu, Panasonic’s advantage in the EV battery market lies in its capability to “use craftsmanship to maintain safety even while raising the performance of a battery.” And after leading the development of the next-generation cells, the executive noted that Panasonic would work very hard to retain its spot. “We don’t want to lose,” the Panasonic executive said.
Some people think the 4680 is supposed to get the cost of batteries between $50 to 100 kWh for electric vehicles.
