It’s been more than a week since a state of emergency was declared in Hungary due to the spread of the coronavirus, and by now the everyday life in Budapest has drastically changed.
Tourist groups have completely disappeared from the streets and despite the beautiful spring weather most of the people in Budapest stay at home, except the ones who go on a walk, run or ride the bike alone by the riverside or in the parks.
No curfews have been issued yet, but everyone is advised to stay at home, avoid crowds and big events to slow down the spread of the virus.
All of the schools, cinemas and theaters are closed and cultural life has moved online. Store opening hours have been restricted and some stores are not opening at all.
Even during rush hours, public transport operates with only a few passengers on the streets, while at the metro stations the clacking escalators are going up and down almost totally empty.
People disappeared, and only the car traffic on the streets gives us the last vital signs.
The country is in the phase of group coronavirus disease and has not yet entered the mass disease period. However, there's a risk that this will happen soon.
Let’s do our best to minimize the number of victims. Let’s stay at home, if we can, and take care of ourselves and others.
