Hi, I'm Matt with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be talking about the Yakima FreshTrack Ski and Snowboard Carrier on our 2023 Toyota RAV4. What's great about a ski and snowboard carrier is it's gonna be a great point to really mount your skis, as opposed to inside your vehicle, 'cause a lot of times, that's gonna pick up a lot of snow and ice, and you don't want that inside your vehicle. They're gonna take up a lot more space too, and they could tear up your interior since it usually have some sharp edges to them. And what I really like about the ones we have today is they're gonna have a SkiLift riser that's actually included. So if you have these skis with taller bindings, it'll be able to accommodate that.
And the way this carrier is gonna operate is we're gonna have a large button at the very end of it. Really easy to press, even if you had those thicker gloves and mittens on. And from this point, we can take off our snowboard. And you'll notice mine is a little bit offset, and that's just 'cause we don't have a lot of space up here, especially if you have raised rails. Now, if you have just maybe a different ski or a different type of roof, you might have more room to play around with.
If that's the case and you really don't like the fit of this, then I'd recommend just checking out a box to keep your skis in. But coming over here, I don't have to reach too far over to grab my skis and pull them off. Now, if you are struggling with doing this, then I'd recommend checking out the Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier, 'cause it's gonna have some trays actually come out to make that process a little bit easier. And if we look inside of it, you'll notice we do have this rubber molding. That is what's keeping your skis in place, so they're not sliding around and scratching one another up.
And I can close this down. And when I do that, you'll notice I do have a lot of these hooks on the front of it. This is to accommodate for different thicknesses of skis, so I have different places that it can mount to. And looking at the front of it, you'll notice I do have this lock core. That lock core is just gonna give me extra security, so no one can come by and take my skis.
And we go below, you'll notice we do have our clamp here. The way this is gonna work is we're gonna have this hand knob with a screw on it that connects to the bottom half. This is also gonna have a security bolt on the side of it to help deter theft. And then, if we look at the backside of this clamp, you'll notice I have multiple points I can hook this too. And that's gonna be hooking on to different types or sizes of crossbar to make this work. And from here we can get a few measurements, just to see how this is gonna live up here. So the first measurement I'm gonna get is gonna be underneath your crossbars. This is getting the total height of those clamps underneath, and this is gonna be sitting at an inch, which is pretty all right. Now, if you have a roof rack that's really close to your roof, you might run into some issues, either trying to get this on or even into place without making contact with anything. So definitely keep that in mind. Now, for the total height it's gonna add, this is gonna be about 5 1/4 on top of our roof. And really, that's not too bad, it's pretty standard for some cases. Now, I'd still recommend just watching out where you're driving, especially if you're going through a low clearance area like a garage. Now, something else to keep in mind is, like I said earlier, this does have an included SkiLift riser. So if you use that, that's gonna even raise this up even further. It's gonna be great if you have any skis with taller bindings. But, since it's gonna rise up even further, just make sure you include that measurement, so you don't hit anything. And as we can see, up here, we still have a lot of space. So we do have 15 inch crossbars. And if you wanna mount anything else up here, you definitely can. If you have anything like a box or a basket, you'll be able to fit that here. Now, in my opinion, I think this is a solid choice if you're looking for a carrier that's gonna be able to work with any skis that have those taller bindings. Like I said earlier, that snowboard I had did have some taller bindings, and it was pretty close.
