Soldier's Joy is possibly the most widely known traditional tune across Europe and America. In this fiddle lesson I teach the tune in old time/bluegrass style, and look at various aspects of technique and performance.
I try out several bowing patterns to suit the different phrasing of the first and second halves.
I look at simple ways of varying the melody, using syncopation and the extending of melody notes. I demonstrate open string drones and double stops.
Finally I show different ways of playing backing on the fiddle; chopping (old style), chopping (new style), the Nashville Shuffle, the Georgia Shuffle, and long held notes.
