ÆPEX Contemporary Performance is thrilled to present this video recording of "Pastoral" (1959) by Julia Perry (1924-1979) featuring flutist Brice Smith and an ensemble under the direction of ÆPEX's music director, Kevin Fitzgerald.
As Janice Y. Wilson describes in her 1971 masters thesis at Eastern Michigan University, "Black Serious Composers", Julia Perry was accomplished and well educated. A native of Akron, OH, she studied at Westminster Choir College, Juilliard, and the Tanglewood Music Center, where her teacher was Luigi Dallapiccola.
We hope this performance video, featuring the spectacular talent of flutist Brice Smith, will make the brilliance of Julia Perry's music more accessible to audiences around the world.
This video was produced with the support of the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Ann Arbor Arts Alliance.
