This 12km walk is a low level hike taking in Grange Fell and Castle Crag (the smallest of the Wainwrights). Starting near the village of Grange we head up through Mossmire Coppice to the waterfall and Watendlath Beck. It is then a low level valley walk to Watendlath Tarn taking in the piece of the Borrowdale Valley. From the tarn we gain altitude on the climb to Grange Fell and admire its rugged features from Brund Fell, the first of our Wainwrights, before heading down to another lakeland village nestled in the Borrowdale Valley: Rosthwaite.
Following the River Derwent we make our way to Castle Crag ascending through the woods. After admiring the view the walk descends to Broadslack Gill which we follow until it merges with the River Derwent on our way back to Grange.
This hike is suitable for most people and is a lesser trodden route around these fells. I have also covered a family friendly walk up Castle Crag which you can also find in the Northwestern Fells playlist on my hompage.
The walk takes around 4 hours and captures fantastic views both at low and high level. No wonder Wainwright felt he must include these fells in his favoured 214.
I hope you enjoy it!
