Toe amputation due to gangrene is a medical procedure where a toe or part of a toe is surgically removed because of tissue death caused by an infection. Gangrene occurs when the blood supply to a certain area is cut off, which can happen due to a variety of reasons such as diabetes, peripheral artery disease, or severe infections. If the affected area is not treated promptly, it can lead to tissue death and the need for amputation. The goal of toe amputation is to prevent the spread of infection and to preserve as much of the foot function as possible. After the procedure, patients may need to undergo physical therapy and wear special shoes or inserts to help with their mobility.
