Students and activists in separate programmes in Dhaka on Thursday remembered Abrar Fahad, slain student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), on his second death anniversary.
Police investigation found that Abrar was brutally murdered on the campus by fellow students of his university who belonged to Bangladesh Chhatra League, a student wing of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League.
The protesting students and activists demanded justice for Abrar and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the homicide.
BUET students and classmates of Abrar arranged programmes on their campus demanding punishment of the culprits.
Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad organised a separate programme on Dhaka University campus where they arranged a rally, photo exhibition.
Globally acclaimed photographer and activist Shahidul Alam, Jahangirnagar University government and politics department professor Abdul Latif Masum, and former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students Union Nurul Haque Nur joined the programme and spoke on the occasion.
They urged all to be united against any tyranny and to raise voice for the oppressed.
Abrar, 21, a second-year electrical and electronic engineering student of BUET, was beaten to death in the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall by Chhatra League leaders and activists early October 7, 2019 apparently for his critical views of the government and Indian ‘aggression’ on Bangladesh on social media.
In September 2020, the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 charged 25 BUET students and BCL leaders and activists with torturing and killing Abrar. The trial is under way.
Twenty-two of the accused are now in jail and three others have been absconding since the case was filed.
