Your brain is the most complex computational device in the known universe, yet it has many limitations, flaws, and bugs. These bugs arise from the brain’s building blocks, its architecture, and because we did not evolve to live in the predator-free, sugar-abundant, marketing-saturated, information-packed world we have built for ourselves. A consequence of our brain bugs is that like a digital computer that can be exploited by a virus, our brains can be exploited by advertising, propaganda, and media, and lead us to make decisions that are not in our own best interest. Dean Buonomano is a neuroscientist at UCLA. He is a leading researcher on how the brain tells time. His latest book is Your Brain is a Time Machine: The Neuroscience and Physics of Time. His previous book was Brain Bugs: How the Brain’s Flaws Shape Our Lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
