In an ever-changing society of social media and the “rise of the millennials” we have seen a significant rise in depression in America. A report from Blue Cross Blue Shield finds 4.3 percent of adults diagnosed with depression in 2016. Among young adults aged 18 to 34, 4.4 percent had major depression in 2016, compared to 3 percent in 2013. That’s a 47 percent increase.
Past studies have shown meditation, forgiveness, and gratitude are linked to good health. Previous research has revealed that happy people live longer. Now, a study that was conducted by researchers from UCL, Princeton University, and Stony Brook University reports that having a sense of meaning and purpose may also increase your lifespan. And according to healthtalk.org, a common symptom of depression is the absence of purpose and meaning in life.
