Alabama's renters who have fallen behind on payments are losing the protection against eviction they've enjoyed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of July 31, the nationwide moratorium against evictions for nonpayment is over.
According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the past year featured a lot fewer eviction proceedings. While the moratorium halted evictions for nonpayment, renters could still be evicted for reasons such as criminal activity, damaging property or threatening the safety of other tenants.
