STORYLINE:
Cardinals met in Vatican City on Wednesday for a third day of meetings to plan the next conclave during which they will choose the next pope.
The preparatory meetings are designed to allow the cardinals to acquaint themselves with one another and discuss the state of the Catholic Church, including the main issues that the next pope will have to address.
US Cardinal Justin Francis Rigali said he hoped there would be no unnecessary delay in officially setting a date for the conclave.
"I don't think they are able to announce the beginning of the conclave until they have a sense that the business is coming to an end, but I think that ... we certainly don't want to delay this in any way," he told the Associated Press.
"The Church doesn't want the process to go on any longer than necessary and useful," Rigali added.
A total of 110 of the 115 voting-age cardinals attended the second day of preparatory meetings on Tuesday, the Vatican said.
Cardinals in Rome have stressed the importance of these sessions as there is no clear front-runner in the election.
Those still making their way to Rome were: Egyptian Patriarch Antonios Naguib, and Cardinals Karl Lehmann of Germany, Jean-Baptiste Pham of Vietnam, Kazimierz Nycz of Poland and John Tong Hon of Hong Kong, the Vatican said.
The Vatican insisted nothing was amiss and that the five cardinals would be present in the coming days.
Meanwhile, pope emeritus Benedict XVI remained holed up at the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, while cardinals pick his successor.
