During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed the 2019 BMW X5 M.

BMW continues the development of the 2019 X5, with our spies getting real close to the range-topping X5 M version.


The German car maker wants the new X5 M to become the most focused high-performance SUV in the market and for that reason it will employ the powertrain of the latest M5, meaning a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with no less than 600PS (592hp).

That’s 25PS more than the outgoing model but given the X5’s move to the lighter, stiffer and more capable CLAR architecture, we’re probably going to witness a BMW SUV cracking the 4-sec barrier for the 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint.

The new generation of the X5 is expected to lose a significant amount of weight, with some reports even claiming as much as 300kg (661lbs). That will certainly help the dynamics of the new X5 M, which will go against models like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo once it hits the market.

BMW’s upcoming super-SUV will also be physically bigger than its predecessor, giving more space for the occupants. The cabin is expected to feature the company’s latest bells and whistles, including a high-definition touchscreen display for the infotainment system. Level 2 semi-autonomous capabilities are a given too, with the new BMW X5 using the same technology with the 5- and 7-Series models.

The exterior look of the BMW X5 M will be enhanced with the more aggressive M body kit that includes different front and rear bumpers, fender extensions and deeper side sills, as well as quad exhaust pipes. The test car you see in the pictures rides on a set of 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in winter tires.
