(29 Oct 2021) U.S. First Lady Jill Biden professed her love for Italy as she met her French counterpart Brigitte Macron in a cafe in Rome.
"I love Italy, Brigitte loves Italy. I mean, who could not love Italy really?" she told reporters gathered outside the cafe.
The two women were meeting as leaders from the world's 20 largest economies descended on Rome for the G20 summit.
Their husbands, U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, also met Friday in the first face-to-face discussions between the pair since the U.S. and Britain agreed a secret submarine deal with Australia, leaving France in the lurch and igniting a diplomatic spat.
Biden didn't formally apologize to Macron, but conceded the U.S. should not have caught its oldest ally by surprise, describing the American handling of the situation as "clumsy".
COVID-19 economic recovery and climate change are expected to be the two main issues on the agenda at Saturday's G-20, before leaders head to Glasgow, Scotland, for the COP26 U.N. climate conference.
Police were out in force already Friday as the leaders began arriving, and schools in the Italian capital cancelled afternoon activities so students could get home before most roadblocks were set up.
