If you think about it the original prescription drugs were herbs. During the Roman Empire in 50 AD there was evidence it was used with snake bites. 100 years later it was documented to help with the liver, spleen, kidney stones and increasing the flow of urine.
Speaking of the liver this is the herbs most well-known benefit and what it's used for. Helping with hepatitis, alcoholism, jaundice, cirrhosis and gallbladder problems.
It has been proven to be anti-inflammatory and it's an antioxidant. Plus it could help the liver by growing new cells according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Animal studies have proven that it can help the liver, unfortunately human studies have been mixed.
The good news is according to cancer research UK a study has shown it to help with reducing the harmful effects of chemotherapy on the liver. Plus according to studies by the University of Minnesota it stops cancer cell growth in prostate, skin, breast and cervical cells.
There is evidence that it helps with cholesterol and with blood sugar levels. A 2006 study in Phytotherapy Research which included 51 people gave half milk thistle and the other half a placebo.
By the end of the study the group that took this plant had a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol. In addition it helped regulate blood sugar levels in that group.
There is also some evidence that it helps the skin. A pair of University of Colorado Cancer studies show that this plant kills skin cells mutated by UV radiation, this protects the skin from cancer and photo-aging. Photo-aging is premature aging of the skin from the sun.
