On Thursday afternoon, Salisbury Cathedral was evacuated after someone "tried to smash the case of the historic Magna Carta", in what police believe was an attempted theft of the document.

Shortly before 5pm, alarms were activated after an attempt was made to smash the glass box surrounding the document - which alerted staff who called the police.

A 45-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted theft, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage.

The Very Reverend Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury, gave this statement to That's TV on Friday afternoon.
