In order to tackle climate change, the European Union will start introducing a carbon border tax in 2023 on imported products that emit high amounts of CO₂ equivalent greenhouse gases. This threatens Russia with significant losses of federal budget revenues and reduced competitiveness of Russian products in the international arena, primarily metals, pipes, fertilizers, cement, and electricity. In order to solve this problem in 2021, the Russian Government started a major effort to adapt the Russian economy to the energy transition. In October, the country adopts Russia's Low-Carbon Development Strategy until 2050 and begins a comprehensive effort to reshape the entire economy and ESG-transformation. The tourism and hospitality industry will not be able to stay away. The challenges, risks and opportunities for the tourism industry arising from the global transformation of the economy and all spheres of human activity will be presented for discussion.
