Outer island communities of the Republic of Maldives use a mix of water sources in their daily life, groundwater being one of them. Due to the impacts of rapid urbanization, pollution of water resources, and climate change, this source of water is being highly impacted. The groundwater quality in many outer islands is poor and the groundwater overuse and barriers to natural recharge impacts the sustainability of this important resource. One of the goals of the 3SWater project is to find out why this happens and how this water source can be improved by learning from the local traditions as well as appropriately using state-of-the-art technologies. Co-discovery, co-learning and co-design are key pillars of the project, and citizen science-based approaches are widely used.
