Witnesses fled in panic as a "fireball" struck electricity power lines following the controlled demolition of Didcot power station's cooling towers. One eyewitness at the scene in Oxfordshire described the scene as "horrific" and "like a horror film" as sparks fell on her. Another man said that he thought "it was the end for him" as he fled the scene, fell to the ground, and "rolled across the road". At least one leg injury was recorded while several drivers commented their vehicles had been damaged by the explosion.
At this moment, it is not known if the explosion was a direct result of the controlled demolition.
Thousands of homes in Oxfordshire were left without power after the demolition. Video shows the moment of the demolition and then electrical cables in flames and eyewitnesses describing sparks "flying everywhere" as police and paramedics arrive on the scene.
