Happy Shirt Day! Painting with Primary Colors
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Begin your summer season with a happy, relaxed look! My good friend George got me this very cool shirt - so today became "Happy Shirt Day!" Continuing this happy vibe, I thought that painting with upbeat primary colors was the way to go today.
The primaries - Red, Yellow, Blue - are so universally basic for color schemes, happiness, resulting in upbeat paintings! Think of the circus! Red, Yellow, Blue… a good starting color combination.
In this BobBlast, I'm painting a simple landscape using the
primaries. Starting with Bright White Kilimanjaro watercolor paper, I draw a simple outline of my intended landscape - a horizontal design composition, just to give me a direction. Next, I lightly paint those same lines with the Red acrylic paint. I could have used any of the three primaries to paint my guide lines - today I chose Red.
Materials:
•Kilimanjaro Watercolor Paper
•Holbein Artist Acrylic Paint - heavy body, in these colors
•Pyrrole Light Red
•Cobalt Blue
•Cadmium Yellow
•Titanium White
•Mars Black
•and… my favorite Luminous Opera (just because)
After painting in my guide lines, I loosely start painting in the Yellow so it randomly fills some of the shaped areas. I pick up the Red and scrumble in a mixture of the Yellow and Red. I stop too soon so I can clean my brush and mix a light Blue for the sky.
And there you have it! A quick, colorful sketch using only the primaries. At the very end - I add a few strokes of Luminous Opera to spark up the fields of springtime flowers!
