"Bhangra Funk! A brand new genre invented by Avipaul!" - Bobby Friction, BBC Asian Network.
I wrote this song - combining The Funk with Bhangra beats - as a response to the increased xenophobia in a post 9-11 world. The Dhol drum unapoligetically representing our culture, our presence and our continued contribution to this place we call home.
It questioned the ignorance of bigots and their resistance to us living with them integrated and as equals.
Little did I know years later... we'd be where we are now. We live in a world where racists wear their bigotry with pride. Politicians in power spewing hatred reinforcing the notion that one race is superior to others.
I hate the fact that this song is more relevant now than it was when I first released it.
