A 17-year-old brother shot his sister for marrying a man from another caste in Haryana's Kaithal. Twenty-year-old Komal Rani, a Gujjar, had married Anil from the Dalit community four months ago. Three hours away in Mahendragarh, Parveena's village of Dholera has ostracized Vikas's village Bigopur because of their union. Parveen and Vikas belong to the same caste but have breached the social contract of brotherhood between the neighboring villages, which is deeply ingrained in the rural culture of the state.
