President-elect Donald Trump threatened to reassert U.S. control over the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of charging excessive fees for its use. Speaking at the AmericaFest event, he argued that if Panama did not follow the moral and legal principles tied to the canal's ownership, the U.S. would demand its return. Trump also expressed concern about China potentially gaining influence over the canal, though China does not control it. A subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings manages two ports at the canal's entrances. Trump’s comments followed a similar post on Truth Social and signaled a more aggressive stance in U.S. foreign diplomacy. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino reaffirmed the country's sovereignty over the canal, defending its rates and stressing that Panama's control was non-negotiable. The U.S. previously administered the canal until 1999, when full control was transferred to Panama under agreements made in 1977.
