Trump also expressed concern about China potentially gaining influence over the canal, though China does not control it. A subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings manages two ports at the canal's entrances. Trump’s comments followed a similar post on Truth Social and signaled a more aggressive stance in U.S. foreign diplomacy. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino reaffirmed the country's sovereignty over the canal, defending its rates and stressing that Panama's control was non-negotiable. The U.S. previously administered the canal until 1999, when full control was transferred to Panama under agreements made in 1977.
