Twenty-four people were killed and 24 others were injured in a deadly car crash in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.
The accident occurred just before 8am on the E30, or Old Truck Road, on the outskirts of Al Ain by the Al Rawda Palace. According to the head of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, the driver of a large truck carrying 75 tons of sand and building materials crashed into a bus when its brakes failed.
"The truck driver lost control of his vehicle, causing it to land on top of the bus and trap its passengers under the cargo of gravel, police said," according to Reuters.
The bus was carrying 45 maintenance workers who were being brought to Al Rawda Palace to work.
The Bangladesh embassy said 16 of its citizens were among the dead. The Indian Embassy said one of its citizens was also among the dead.
According to Reuters, "The per capita death toll on UAE roads is among the highest in the world, according to World Health Organisation data."
