The Kutai Kingdom was a Hindu kingdom that existed in the 4th century CE in the eastern part of Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. It is considered the oldest kingdom in Indonesia because of the discovery of seven stone inscriptions, called Yupa, that date back to that period. The Yupa were found in the Bukit Brubus area, near the Mahakam River, in the Kutai Regency.
The Yupa inscriptions tell us about the reign of King Mulawarman, the son of King Aswawarman and the grandson of King Kudungga. Mulawarman was a powerful and generous ruler who performed many religious rituals and donated a lot of cows to the Brahmins, the Hindu priests. He also expanded his kingdom's territory and influence, and maintained good relations with other kingdoms in the region.
