A Whitsuntide Walk or Procession in Goole, Yorkshire, on a Whit Monday around 1960. Films of two other years are also on this channel. Here the procession is beside the river bank in Hook Road returning towards the town centre. The floats representing biblical scenes were created by children from the different church Sunday schools. Children without a role on the floats also took part, the older ones walking the route with their Sunday School teachers, the younger ones riding on lorries. What would health and safety make of 4 and 5 year old children riding on open lorries now, even though they only went at walking pace? Every year large numbers of people turned out to watch. This was towards the end of the era when towns like Goole thrived with groups and activities of all kinds, and Sunday School was as much a social as a religious activity. I would guess the Whitsuntide processions died out in the 1970s. Digitised cine film (standard 8 no sound) by Fred Collinson in Goole around 1960.
