presents episode #49 | EINAT WILF part 1 of 4
Grew up on the Left politically, believed the conflict
with Arabs was about land…
-believed in Land for Peace
-Golan Heights to Syria;
-West Bank & Gaza to Palestinians;
-Sinai to Egypt
Thought 2000 Camp David
proposal would be accepted:
sovereign Palestinian state; holy sites
and capital in Jerusalem
Saw Arafat walk away from this 2000 proposal and
again in 2008; and not being criticized by own people
-thought this was everything they wanted, but
-proposal was followed by massive violence in
Israel
-the 'Land for Peace' Israelis were
wondering, what is going on?
-what do Palestinians actually want?
Realized, they have always told us what they wanted:
-from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea
Palestine will be free of a sovereign Jewish state
-they have been very consistent in this stand
-have always made decisions from this perspective
The 20th century begins with empires, and ends with
world divided into sovereign states…
-early in the century, the Ottoman Empire had many
ethnicities, including many Jews
-end of WWI: the idea is: empires will
be replaced by nation states
Jews, as one of the empire’s
peoples, were large enough to have
had a state 5X larger than present
day Israel
Has been a continuous Jewish presence in this area,
-dating back to Roman and even the Babylonian times
End of WWI, Britain & France want to continue their
empires, but America says no: need sovereign states
-leads to compromise: the mandate system:
Ottoman Empire's various peoples
not ready for self-determination
-America sees this as beginning of
self-determination state building
Who deserves self-determination?
-Arabs; Jews; Turks; Armenians; Kurds
-All of these are designated to have states
-Turks take over their side, undoing Armenians & Kurds
Arabs receive 4 mandates:
-Syria & Lebanon;
-Iraq & Trans Jordan
Jews received mandate for Palestine
-everyone understood: Palestine
meant Jewish
League of Nations entrusts Britain with this mandate…
-Jews were already recognized as the people with the
right for their self-determination
-they legitimized British tutelage
League of Nations began mandate by
recognizing historical connection of
Jewish people to Palestine; therefore
"They will reconstitute their
national home in this land”
Arab states emerge from this process to become
sovereign states…
Only mandate, only trust that is betrayed, is British
to the Jews--due to Arab violence
Arabs, for 1400 years, have only known Jews who
were meek, powerless, stateless
This was challenged by Zionism
-which was met with violence to
put Jews back in 'proper place’
Arab violence is barbaric & brutal in reaction to the
possibility of a Jewish state in any part of the British
mandate area…
-they were highly successful
-this prevented the State of Israel from
emerging in the 1930s
This was before the Holocaust…
and would have helped prevent it
Because of Arab violence, in 1920s & 1930s, Britain
betrays their mandate from League of Nations…
-biggest betrayal: closing down of mandate
to Jewish immigration from Europe
This closing down, due to Arab violence,
condemned many, many European
Jews to the genocide
2 decades later, same in Pan-Arab
world, but then they had Israel to
go to
