The top 8 common mistakes on Keto/IF are:
1. Doing Keto without Intermittent Fasting or vice versa. These two go together and help address insulin resistance. They should always be done together from the start of changing your diet to Keto.
2. Eating when not hungry. We are so programmed to grab something to snack on. Eating in between meals leads to insulin spikes. Eating sufficient fat with each meal helps to sustain you between meals.
3. Too much or not enough protein. You need protein to build muscle but too much is turned into sugar in the body. With 3 meals a day, you should target 3-6 oz of protein per meal. With 2 meals, do about 4-5 oz of protein per meal, and with one meal a day (OMAD), 6-8 oz.
4. Not eating or omitting vegetables. With dirty keto or lazy keto, you will lose weight; however, the healthy state of your body is a whole different story. Vegetables supply us with important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Without these vital nutrients, you can begin to see symptoms such as thinning hair, hear loss, etc. We target 7-10 cups of veggies per day.
5. Too focused on weight loss and not waist loss. Keto and Intermittent is about getting into a healthy state. You need to get healthy first in order to lose weight. Not the other way around. When your body heals from the inside out, the excess weight will come off. Your waistline (protruding belly) is one way to tell if you may be dealing with insulin resistance.
6. Hidden carbohydrates. There are hidden carbs in a lot of foods which is why it's important to read labels and track your food intake.
7. Omitting electrolytes (potassium, sodium, magnesium) and B vitamins. These are critical especially when you are transitioning from burning sugar to burning fat.
8. Doing Keto and Intermittent fasting half way. This is about a healthy lifestyle to heal your body.
