Ounces, pounds, and tons are customary units of weight. We can use models, such as a number line or a table, to show the relationship between the units that are being compared. There are 16 ounces in 1 pound. An ounce is less than a pound because we need 16 of them to be equal to 1 pound. An ounce is 1 of 16 equal parts of a pound. We can use a spring scale to measure weight. There are 2,000 pounds in 1 ton. We make a table that relates tons and pounds. When the number of units of weight are the same, we compare the size of the units. We need to make sure to multiply by the correct amount when converting the units. We compare ounces, pounds, and tons by using the symbols less than, greater than, or equal to. We solve 3 word problems that involve comparing customary units of weight.
