In this English Cottage garden tour, I will show you how to plant shrubs in a new flower bed including Lilac, Viburnum, and flowering current.
I’m Annette and this is the front garden of our property here in UK. We live in South Buckinghamshire in the beautiful Chilterns. Our Zone is equivalent to US zone 8. We average about 707mm (27.8”) of annual rainfall and have heavy clay soil.
The border we planted today has been dug over once to remove old tree roots and brambles. It is south facing, with the eastern end getting full sun and the western end only receiving half sun due to a large horse chestnut tree that overhangs our property. We have added garden compost and will mulch heavily with spent mushroom compost to enrich the soil. Even though the soil is heavy clay, it is already quite rich and fertile because it has never been cultivated and tended before. This area had previously been left to naturalise for many years and has been able to accumulate humus and microbes from the natural composting of the leaves from the overhanging tree. Unfortunately, our builders also used this area to park their diggers and trucks, so it has recently been severely compacted.
Today we planted:
Viburnum plicatum 'Watanabe' - Japanese Snowball
Syringa vulgaris 'Madame Lemoine' - Common Lilac
Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum kilimanjaro - Viburnum
RIBES x gordonianum - Gordon's Currant
Clematis tsukiko - Clematis
Also shown and previously planted were:
Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata Aurea' Conifer - Golden Irish Yew
Malus Floribunda - Japanese Crab Apple
Let me know if you have any questions – I’d love to hear your thoughts on our plant choices too.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.
