Italy's ability to meet its debts has been questioned by a ratings agency.
Moody's dropped its credit rating of the country by three notches for the first time since 1993, leaving it on a even footing with Malta.
The move is expected to intensify pressure on European leaders to shore up the eurozone's banks. If the Italian economy goes under, that could create problems in Europe and around the world on an epic scale.
