In this video, Scottsdale/Paradise Valley plastic surgeon, Dr. Daniel Shapiro discusses the options that can be done for a sagging neck and jawline.
The best way to answer that is presentation. There's a certain population of patients, about 20% in Dr. Shapiro’s practice, that are candidates for completely only a neck lift.
What is a neck lift? A neck lift is generally a procedure where an incision is made beneath the chin and then sometimes behind the ears. Then the neck skin is elevated to get rid of the turkey neck and the extra skin, and the muscles in the midline are made like a tighter hammock to get rid of the turkey gobbler.
Most people, though, have some extra tissue along the cheek area, and really are better candidates for a full facelift. A lot of times, that word really scares patients: facelift versus neck lift. Neck lift seems like it's much less. Really, the recovery for either a neck lift and a facelift is about the same, about 10 days really. The stitches are staying about the same.
The difference on a facelift versus a neck lift is a facelift gives me probably better control of the final result if somebody has some extra tissue essentially along the jowl area. The incisions for a facelift will continue to the side line, to the sideburn, and behind the ear, whereas a neck lift generally is at the ear lobe, behind the ear, and sometimes up along the tragus.
