Clogs which are usually wooden are known as klompen in Dutch and have been used in the Netherlands since medieval times.
The “geta” in Japan and “albarcas” in Spain are clog shoes too but the pointed toe and hand-painted wooden shoes are the Dutch clogs. These clogs were made in the early 13th century in the Netherlands. They were designed to protect the feet of factory workers, artisans, farmers, fishermen, & other trade jobs.
Earlier, clogs were not made entirely from wood but had only a wooden sole with leather strapped over the top. As these were not very protective, the clogs were later carved out from willow or poplar. Nails, hooks, and sharp objects cannot penetrate the wood, and muddy fields are easier to move around in clogs than the boots. These clogs were also wore around the house & even worn to churches and weddings.
In modern days, most Dutch hardly wear the clog shoes anymore. Should we spot any, they’re usually the gift versions for the visiting tourists.
