Co-authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely discuss racism in American and its portrayal in “All American Boys”, the 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature. The “All American Boys” book is one of many books about racisms as it deals with two young teens—one black and one white—who grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country, bitterly divided by racial tension. Like many Jason Reynolds books, this story touches on the marginalization of African Americans. But with the perspective of co-author Brendan Kiely, the characters beautifully exemplify the black and white experience in our country.
