In this simulation, Newtonian fluid is compared with a viscoplastic material in the context of material extrusion additive manufacturing. The fluid properties were chosen so as to yield similar apparent viscosities in the nozzle and therefore require similar force to extrude the material. Despite the similar apparent viscosities in the nozzle, we can see that the Newtonian material does not maintain its shape after the deposition. On the other hand, the viscoplastic material stays “rigid” after the deposition, as the shear rate decreases below the yield point and the apparent viscosity increases significantly.
