We have all been taught that the day has 24 hours and that this is the period that planet Earth takes to take a turn on its own axis. And then, after all, this is what our watches tell us. But, Is this correct?
This definition is missing a keyword to be more precise. That word is: approximately. We have become accustomed to considering that the day has 24 hours as an absolute truth, but the reality is that those 24 hours are the average duration of the days. Depending on how the concept of “day” is understood, it can last more or less than 24 hours.
We are certainly so used to seeing time in such a numerically accurate way with our clocks and calendars, that most people lose sight of reality about the duration of days. What one day is, can be understood according to the point of view with which you look.
