In this episode, I'm joined by International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) World Champion and Professional MMA Fighter Rafael Lovato Jr. We talk about the events leading to his brain disorder diagnosis and how it propelled him to power through what he calls the "pinnacle challenge" of his martial arts journey. Rafael, 38, had been diagnosed with brain cavernoma, a malformation of blood vessels in the brain.
Here, he reveals more details on his disorder, his secrets to defeating his opponents, what separates a martial artist from a fighter, and why we shouldn't train only to win but to continuously learn. Also, we reflect on the meaning of success and death and how martial arts teaches us the art of letting go – a skill that will save us from life’s most difficult moments.
His father introduced 13-year-old Rafael to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and reinforced young Lovato's commitment to the sport. At age 16, Rafael traveled to Brazil to compete and train for world championships. He eventually earned his black belt in 2004 and became the youngest American to receive a black belt in BJJ at that time. He's the first person to ever capture an IBJJF Grand Slam in 2007, winning the IBJJF World Championship, Brazilian National Championship, Pan Championships, and European Championships. In 2014, he took his journey to the MMA cage and, 3 years later, signed with Bellator. Two decades since he first dominated the podium, Rafael reached the peak of his professional grappling career when he was crowned the Bellator Middleweight World Champion in 2019, a title he needed to vacate following his life-threatening diagnosis.
Recognized as one of the most accomplished American BJJ fighters of all time, Rafael remains incredibly down-to-earth. His humility and spirituality define how he moves on the podium and lives his life. Despite his disorder, his history-making days are far from over as he commits to elevating young martial artists' quality of education and training. He currently owns, operates, and teaches at Lovato's School of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.
