In this video, we will show you a top 10 list of the best American Civil War movies ever made. America, while a series of sovereign states unified together by one common government, has not always been on the same page throughout its history. No, there have been times when political conflicts have threatened to tear the union apart. And this all reached its worst point back in the mid 1800’s as that was when the US Civil War broke out, a lengthy and deadly affair which saw both the north and the south lose a combined 700,000 men.
Obviously then, this left a huge scar on the nation, one which to this day has never properly healed. So it’s always a topic Americans want to come back to again and again through popular media. And this has been what’s seen countless movies made about the subject, with some of the most prominent of then being 1976’s The Outlaw Josey Wales, 1993’s Gettysburg, and 1962’s John Ford epic How the West Was Won, a movie which had as all-star cast including John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, and Gregory Peck.
Even in recent years, new films continue to be made about the US civil war, with Steven Spielberg taking a stab at it himself by directing Lincoln in 2012, the biopic about the president responsible for freeing the slaves and starting the whole conflict. And then of course there are the movies which simply use the civil war as a backdrop to tell a more personal romance story, such as was the case with the timeless 1939 classic, Gone With the Wind.
