Iranians were going to the polls on Friday (23/5) to elect their next president, in the fiercest political showdown between conservative and moderate factions in the Islamic government since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
The election's real test is between the two main contenders, parliamentary speaker Ali Akbar Nategh-Nuri -- the favorite of Iran's powerful conservative establishment -- and moderate former culture minister Mohammad Khatami.
