Today, join me as I explore one of the most beautiful mid-century-modern homes I've ever seen. Designed by Architect Grant Whatmough in 1957, the home was custom-built for the Floyd family. It was tailored to the family's needs and the site's natural qualities. Mr.Floyd and his family lived in the home for only two years before returning to England. Whatmough was a devoted follower of Frank Lloyd Wright who heavily inspired his designs. The house shows the influence of Wright’s Usonian architecture of the 1930s.
While the interior remains mostly untouched with original fixtures and fittings, the exterior has had several alterations over the years. The carport was enclosed into a garage, the exterior was painted from white to beige, and bay windows were added to the front and rear of the home. These changes caused the house to not qualify for heritage Designation. The Heritage assessment stated that if demolition occurs, the loss of cultural heritage value can be adequately mitigated through documentation and salvage. That's an interesting statement when only the wood ceiling beams were recommended for salvage from this home, nothing else.
With the findings of the heritage assessment, the city voted to allow this stunning piece of architecture be demolished for a new modern mansion. The property was sold for land value in 2022 for $14,000,000.
In my opinion, it's a screaming shame that this home will be knocked down. Mid-century homes of this caliber are a dying breed and to demolish it without any real salvage is idiotic.
While I can't save this home, I can give you one last look inside before it's gone forever.
