A Chinese-built hydropower plant will make Cambodia self-reliant on electricity while providing cheaper energy for the Southeast Asian country.
The 400-megawatt Lower Sesan II Hydropower Plant is Cambodia's biggest hydropower project to date, and its 6.5-kilometer-long dam is also Asia's longest.
Starting initial operations in late 2017, the plant is expected to become fully operational by October 2018, when it will generate one-fifth of the country's total electricity output.
The project is a joint venture of China's Huaneng Hydrolancang International Energy, holding 51 percent of the stake, Cambodia's Royal Group, owning 39 percent, and Vietnamese EVN International Joint Stock Company, possessing 10 percent.
Cai Kaiming, a third-generation Chinese Cambodian employed to help relocate the villagers affected by the project, said the plant is providing the much needed cheap power to facilitate Cambodia’s social and economic development.
