Sea shells are created and formed by animals! They’re usually created by soft-bodied mollusks who need their shells to protect their soft bodies. The animal secretes calcium carbonate which then hardens on the outside of their bodies and forms their shell. When the animal passes away, it leaves behind sea shells.
