Today we are taking a look at which DirectX version you should be using for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds depending on what sort of gameplay experience you want to have.
In this video we compare DirectX 11, DirectX 11 Enhanced and DirectX 12 in multiple scenarios including gameplay, training mode, explosions, smoke tests across various maps. All DirectX versions are tested in PUBG Season 14.
Overall, DirectX11 is the safest choice for PC Players. It's an older rendering system, but that does not mean it is worse than the newer ones. It has had many years of optimizations and works well with many popular graphics cards and also low end cards or 4GB VRAM Gpu's. This is likely why it is set as the default rendering option for PUBG. Its quality is starting to age now but it performs consistently well throughout the tests.
DirectX11 Enhanced is mostly similar to DX11, but can offer improvements in big cities, where multiple objects are often rendered in parallel. There is not much information about DX11e but it seems that it will prioritize storing more information in the Graphics card video memory (VRAM) than system memory (RAM), things like object data, texture streaming information and more. This is beneficial because when the game needs this information, It can be accessed faster which can lead to better FPS and less stutter. DirectX11 Enhanced also offers minimal frame dips when near explosions and smoke which can be beneficial for competitve players where stuttering is a big problem. As DX11E is not tested sufficiently, it is not 100% cerain that it will perform equally on all hardware, which is one thing to keep in mind.
DirectX 12 should only be used if you are trying to achieve a high visual quality game and do not mind losing some FPS, I would in fact cap the FPS at a stable value you like such as 60 or 120 to get a smoother game. Also for me personally I had a render bug with DX12 which caused grass to be flickering making the game unplayable at some points. This is one of the downsides to a newer rendering system such as DX12, It is less tested and therefore less optimized.
