What is the relationship between kinetic energy and freedom of movement?
- kinetic energy: the energy that an object has because it is moving
- freedom of movement: the way molecules in a substance move around relative to each other
Let's pretend the magnetic marbles here are molecules.
When the molecules have more kinetic energy (they are moving faster), their freedom of movement increases. If the freedom of movement increases enough, the marbles separate.
If the freedom of movement is GREATER than the magnetic attraction, the marbles separate.
If the freedom of movement is LESS than the magnetic attraction, the marbles stay together.
If the freedom of movement is GREATER than the magnetic attraction, the MOLECULES separate and substances will CHANGE PHASES, either MELTING or EVAPORATING.
If the freedom of movement is LESS than the magnetic attraction, the MOLECULES stay together. Therefore, if we DECREASE the freedom of movement, the molecules may CHANGE PHASES, and CONDENSE or FREEZE.
