STORYLINE:
Clashes between locals and security forces broke out in San José del Golfo, in central Guatemala, after some locals prevented a voting center from opening on Sunday.
Locals in the central highlands town did not allow the voting center to open after they learned that people from another municipality were bused in to vote.
When electoral authorities tried to open a new voting location in the town, they were blocked by locals, according to a statement from the Guatemala Department election board.
The army and National Police were rushed in and clashes broke out when they tried to disperse people.
Security forces attempted to disperse the crowd with tear gas, and some locals responded by throwing rocks at them.
Some locals were seen being arrested by police.
By midday on Sunday, voting centers in San José del Golfo remained closed.
