STORYLINE
Gunmen stormed a government compound in a northern Afghan city on Thursday, killing a policeman and wounding several people, according to an Afghan official.
Police official Mohammadullah, who like most Afghans uses only one name, said that militants stormed the compound with the chief prosecutor's office in Mazar-i-Sharif and were exchanging fire with the police.
Sher Jan Durani, spokesman for the provincial police chief, said the siege began after the "terrorists entered the compound" and it was then surrounded by police.
He said most of the employees and prosecutors had been rescued by police but that some were wounded in the shootout.
Insurgent attacks are rare in the economically stable and developed Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital of Balkh province.
