The truck drivers had been protesting against Section 106(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the past two days. The new provision in the BNS regarding hit-and-run cases includes a punishment of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to 7 lakh rupees. The protestors were concerned that this new provision might lead to unjust punishments such as mob violence. They also believed that the government should have consulted with stakeholders before making such a decision. However, the strike was called off after a meeting between Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and the representative of All India Motor Transport Congress. To know more about why the protest was called off, watch the video.
