Mating in chameleons

In the right time, induced by natural cycles, the chameleon female becomes receptive. It shows her readiness to mate through changed colors, which are species-specific, often using light green or yellow tones, red caps etc... It allows the male to come closer and does not show aggression.
The male shows off, imposes the female and then climbs it from behind. One of his hemipenes penetrates the female’s cloaca.
The sexual act, during which the males pushes the sperm to the cloaca of the female executing pulsating pumping movements, lasts for several minutes to several hours, depending on individual and on species.
